Part 1 of “Wait, which movie is Empire of the Sun and which is The Last Emperor?” in which we watch Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s autobiographical World War II novel about a very young Christian Bale living out the worst possible version of Home Alone in Japanese-occupied Shanghai.

Bale is great, and the direction is very Spielbergian, but it’s definitely a problematic film.
