Episode 177 – The ‘Burbs (1989)

Four men stare off incredulously at something off-camera. One is Tom Hanks in a bathrobe. One is Corey Feldman in, get this, a black Batman tank top with a red mesh tank top over it. Amazing late 80s fashion.

Ray just wants a peaceful staycation–why do his neighbors have to be so weird? We kick off Dennis Vs. the Movies Month with one of Mary’s favorite movies from her childhood.

Starring: Tom Hanks, Henry Gibson, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Corey Feldman, Brother Theodore, Wendy Schaal, and Carrie Fischer. Written by Dana Olsen. Directed by Joe Dante.

From the newsletter:
Dennis: Love Joe Dante, it has a sneaky charm. Tom Hanks is perpetually used as a modern Jimmy Stewart, and he seems to try to access the quirky Harvey/Stewart in the Burbs and JoeVtV. Of course Jimmy was building off of archetypes before him, but having been so successful at the same time the studios were so successful he’s left his mark. Joe Dante has all of Roger Zemeckis’s chops, his movies are crowd pleasing and fun, but he can’t escape his mad magazine satirical soul.
