Hollywood Avalon, Episode 23 – Star Wars (1977)

The Hollywood Avalon logo, a drawing a green hill with stone steps leading up to a castle tower, with Hollywood Avalon written on the hill and Mary vs the Movies written against a colorful sky.

Look, I know it sounds crazy, but Star Wars has all kinds of Arthurian elements: an orphan boy with a secret destiny; a magic sword; a crazy magician; a princess who needs rescuing; and a big bad guy. Obviously the original film was influenced by all sorts of things (The Hidden FortressLawrence of ArabiaDune; even Lord of the Rings) but it’s no surprise that the stories of King Arthur are a pretty prominent influence on the original movie about a farm boy who wants to be a hero, takes up with a space-wizard and a pirate, and helps bring down an evil empire.

Starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse, and James Earl Jones. Written and directed by George Lucas.

No additional newsletter content, but have a great photo from the movie.

Luke, Leia (and her space buns), and Han look off-camera at something or someone. Luke and Han have guns. Excuse me, they have blasters or whatever. Han has a bit of a smile on his face but also looks suspicious at the same time. The height of Harrison Ford's acting until Shrinking, in my opinion.
